Her first published novel was Ella Enchanted, which was accepted for publication by HarperTrophy. Reflecting on her experiences, Levine says "those years were some of my happiest. During this time she took writing classes and joined writer's groups. Thus in 1987, she began writing, but over the next nine years, all of her manuscripts were rejected. Writing career Īfter taking a class in writing and illustrating for children, Levine discovered that she enjoyed writing far more than illustrating. She also has an Airedale Terrier named Reggie. She spent the next 27 years working for the government of the state of New York, mainly as a welfare administrator, helping people find jobs. She majored in philosophy at New York's City College, where she received her B.A. She initially aspired to be an actress and painter, and participated in theater troupes before losing interest in acting. Then I should act on my assessment, even if people are disappointed or angry. Instead, I should be figuring out what's best and what I want. When I'm pressured to do something, I tend to knuckle under. I realized only later that I'd created a message for me. While I was writing, the curse was an explanation and the problem that set the whole story going. Ella has to do as she's told, and she takes revenge whenever she can. I was in trouble until I thought of the curse of obedience. It's hard to write a book about a character who annoys and puzzles you. She's so disgustingly good! And why does she take orders from her horrible stepmother and stepsisters? But when I considered it, I realized I didn't like Cinderella or understand her. "Cinderella" is such an important tale, it's the first one I thought of. I was starting a new writing class and needed an idea, so I thought maybe I could expand a fairy tale too. (You should read it if you haven't already.) I wrote it because I love fairy tales and I'd just read Beauty by Robin McKinley, which I admired enormously. You may know that Ella Enchanted was my first published book after ten years of trying.
